Experience in Introduction of Up-to-Date Technologies and Methods of Wastewater Sludge Treatment

Summary

New up-to-date technologies are needed for the solution of problems of utilization of sludge generated in the course of wastewater treatment. In St. Petersburg before the introduction of a burning technology the whole sludge preliminary dewatered at centrifuges was stored at special landfills. During the last fourteen years the whole quantity of sludge from the city’s sewerage treatment facilities is burnt. However the sludge accumulated at landfills during preceding years continues to influence negatively on environment. To eliminate this influence it was decided to process the sludge stored at landfills. With that end in view the advanced technology of sludge geotube dewatering has been chosen. Since the summer of 2009 the industrial application of this technology began at the Northern landfill.

Operational Experience of a Shop of Mechanical Dewatering of Water Treatment Sludge at the Eastern Water Treatment Station

Summary

From January, 2010 the facilities for processing of water treatment sludge operate at the Eastern water treatment station of the Moscow State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodokanal (MSUE). The facilities include settling tank-sludge thickeners, drum thickeners, and centrifuges. The sludge treatment facilities operate round-the-clock. The operational experience shows that influent wastewater is characterized by significant irregularity during the day both by flow rate and by quality. In this connection there was the search for both optimal operating conditions of the facilities and optimal reagents making it possible to achieve the maximum efficiency of dewatering at preservation of acceptable quality of wastewater disposed.

Features of Coagulation of Low Turbid, Color Water of the Vychegda Under Conditions of Low Temperature

Summary

Results of the reagent treatment of low turbid and color water of the Vychegda for the purpose of selection of the efficient method of its clarification is presented. The process of coagulation is characterized by the formation of small, poorly settling flakes. Low temperatures of water require increasing the optimal doses of coagulant almost two times and the optimal doses of flocculant more than two times. It is shown, that the water discoloration up to 5–10 degrees and its maximal clarification are achieved in and around of optimal pH values. The empirical dependences of a coagulant’s dose on influent water color with due regard for its temperature are given. The efficiency of low temperature water treatment depends substantively on flocculation process, the duration of which multiplies several times during the periods of water's low temperatures. Under these circumstances the pressure flotation is the most reasonable and efficient method of clarification.

Pilot testing the technology of low-turbid colored water conditioning in the process of two-stage filtration

Summary

The results of the pilot tests of the technology of low-turbid colored water conditioning by two-stage filtration are presented. The tests were carried out to specify the parameters of the technology being developed and to determine the effectiveness of water purification of the Zeya River (Amur Region) with a view to its use in domestic and industrial water supply of the designed industrial facility. During the test period the river water was characterized by low temperature (3.5–7.5 °С), low pH values (6.5–6.7) and alkalinity (0.4–0.5 mg-eq/dm3) with color up to 80 degrees. To specify the chemical dosages preliminary (laboratory) tests were carried out. It was established that the treatment of river water with sodium hypochlorite provided for a noticeable bleaching effect – up to 40%. However, increasing the oxidizer dosage to more than 10 g/m3 is ineffective. At the specified river water color the dosage of chemical can be set within 5–7 g/m3. Owing to low alkalinity values it is recommended to alkalize water with soda ash at an optimal dose of 6 g/m3. According to the results of the test chemical treatment of water the preference was given to Aqua-Aurat™30 coagulant at doses of 35–40 g/m3. By comparison of the flocculants of Praestol group, Praestol 650TR showed the best results at doses of 0.1–0.15 g/m3. Pilot tests of purifying Zeya river water proved the high efficiency of the two-stage filtration technology (contact prefilter + rapid filter). The use of Aqua-Aurat™30 coagulant in combination with Praestol 650TR flocculant ensured the standard quality of drinking water, as well as the quality required for industrial water supply of the designed industrial facility.

Repeated Use of Supernatant Water Generated in the Course of Treatment of Sludge from Water Treatment Plants

Summary

Results of the laboratory investigation of the process of treatment of flows generated in the course of treatment of sludge at water treatment plants using the flocculants of different types are presented. Two flocculants used at the Moscow State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodokanal, Praestol TR-650 and BC-852, have been evaluated. A few flocculants making it possible to treat the flows (discharges) maximally have been also selected for comparison. An assessment of influence of addition of flows to influent water coming to the facilities of the Eastern water treatment station has been made. Results obtained confirm the necessity of preliminary treatment of flows with flocculants before their supply to the head of facilities. When untreated flows are added the necessity of increasing the doses of reagents used may arise.

Selection of efficient chemicals for low turbid water purification  from surface water sources

Summary

The results of laboratory study of selecting chemicals and optimal dosage for the purification of low turbid water of the Saratov water reservoir are presented. The laboratory tests of aluminium polyoxychlorides (14 kinds) and aluminium sulfate (16 kinds) were carried out. Coagulants manufactured by domestic and foreign manufacturers were studied. The optimal dosages of coagulants and flocculants were determined. Two of the coagulants studied were selected that could ensure the maximum degree of water clarification at the minimum concentration of residual aluminium and permanganate value in drinking water. It was stated that water treatment exclusively with coagulants with subsequent sedimentation and filtration ensured meeting the state drinking water standard. The results of the experimental studies of coagulation of low turbid water of the Saratov water reservoir showed that the maximum water clarification was achieved by sedimentation at the optimal coagulant dosage of 9.6 mg/dm3 for Al2O3 and 0.2 mg/dm3 flocculant dosage. At that the pollution loading on filters is reduced and the filter run increases.

Commercial tests of VTI-M high-rate horizontal clarifier enhanced with microsand

Summary

For the adjustment of enhanced coagulation technology on industrial scale a commercial VTI-M plant has been designed for the purification of surface and waste water as well as storm run-off. The design capacity of the plant is up to 300 m3/h. Enhancing the impurity sedimentation process is achieved using fine-grained sand weighting agent. Its subsequent washing off of the sludge is carried out in a pulse column which provides for reducing significantly the amount of secondary waste compared to the known analogues. The development of a new horizontal type clarifier was carried out on the basis of previous laboratory, pilot and experimental-industrial studies. VTI-M commercial clarifier consistently provides for the high quality clarified water that fully meets the requirements for the composition and quality of water supplied for ion-exchange desalination. During the testing period water was supplied for production needs. The use of the equipment package allows obtaining high quality water while reducing the consumption of acids and alkalis which in turn will reduce the discharge of salt waste and thereby reduce the harmful impact on the environment.

Reconstruction of the facilities for reusing wash water
from de-ironing plant filters

Summary

The object of the study is wash water from multi-layer rapid filters of a deironing plant and flocculant solution used for the wash water treatment. The purpose of the work is developing an optimal process flow scheme for the treatment of wash water for the subsequent reconstruction of the facilities for wash water treatment at the deironing plant in Tomsk. In the course of work, experimental studies were carried out of the interaction of the wash water generated after washing the rapid filters of the artesian water deironing plant in Tomsk with flocculant solution of various concentrations. As a result of the study, the optimal process flow scheme for the wash water treatment was selected; the dose of the flocculant solution was 0.3 g/m3 and the concentration of the flocculant solution was 0.05%. The extent of adoption was as follows: the results of the work were used in the reconstruction project of the wash water treatment facilities at the de-ironing plant in Tomsk. The data on the flocculant dose and concentration of the flocculant solution will be used in the operation of the facilities after the reconstruction. The effectiveness of the flocculant solution is determined by the degree of water clarification visually and in a lab environment by determining the concentration of iron oxide in clarified water. The economic efficiency of the selected process flow scheme is due to the return of 7200 m3/day of water for reuse saving more than 7% of the daily costs for water abstraction.

Comparative efficiency evaluation of a number of known flocculants

Summary

The results of comparative evaluation of coagulating activity of a number of known flocculants at full identity of all basic factors that affect the process of suspended and colloid-dispersed solids are presented. The investigations were carried out in laboratory conditions with model suspension of titanium dioxide in tap water with average solid phase particle size of 4.5 µm. The known flocculants were tested to compare their efficiency. The following series was received: Nalco 8103 ≤ Nanofloc ≤ VPK-402 ≤ Praestol 611 = Praestol 2510 ≤ Praestol 853 ≤ Praestol 655 ≤ Praestol 2500 ≤ Praestol 650. Comparing the flocculant efficiency with a fixed dosage of 5 mg/l resulted in another series: Nalco 8103 ≤ Nanofloc ≤ Praestol 611 ≤ VPK-402 ≤ Praestol 2510 ≤ Praestol 853 ≤ Praestol 655 ≤ Praestol 2500 ≤ Praestol 650. It was suggested to use 5 mg/l dosage of the following flocculants in the process of water clarification: Nalco 8103, VPK-402, Praestol 650, Praestol 655, Praestol 853, Praestol 2500, and 10 mg/l dosage of Nanofloc, Praestol 611, Praestol 2510. It was noted that the ion activity of the flocculants did not affect much their coagulating capacity. In the carried out tests the efficiency of all the tested flocculants was almost an order lower compared to that of aluminium- and iron-containing inorganic coagulants. The received results of the investigations can be used in removing suspended solids from natural and waste water.
