Experience of Introduction of Innovation Technique for Prevention of a Water Hammer

Summary

The water hammer is a serious threat to pipeline systems and pumping equipment. This phenomenon constitutes a special hazard to the systems of water supply and sewerage of a big city. Emergencies and interruptions in the operation of water supply and sewerage networks may lead to grave consequences for the whole of municipal services. Examples of such situations making it possible to assess the scales of possible consequences are given. Basic reasons for generation of the water hammer are described; a brief excursus into the history of study of this phenomenon is presented. A considerable part of the article is devoted to measures aimed at prevention of the water hammer in the systems of water supply and sewerage of Moscow and to the use of energy efficient innovation technique.

Water Treatment and Water Quality Control under the Conditions of Phytoplankton Development on the Example of the Moskva Water Source

Summary

Water bloom can influence significantly on the reliability of water supply of Moscow. The phytoplankton development depends on a whole number of factors: warming up and illuminance of water masses as well as availability of nutrients, biogenic elements (nitrogen and phosphorous mainly), in sufficient quantity are basic of them. Morphometric peculiarities of reservoirs and their hydrological conditions are of great importance. Quantity of phytoplankton changes appreciably year in year out. High concentrations of algae at certain periods favour the deterioration of organoleptic characteristics of water quality which complicates the process of water treatment. In that case it is necessary to carry out a whole number of measures beginning from redistribution of outflows from reservoirs and completing by introduction of innovation technologies of water treatment.

Features of Operation Mode of Water Supply and Distribution System under the Conditions of Decrease in Water Consumption

Summary

In connection with considerable decrease in volumes of water consumption influencing on an operation mode of water supply facilities of a city, optimization of hydraulic operation mode of all links of the system of water supply and distribution is necessary. These links are treatment facilities, pumping stations of the 2nd lift, regulating centres and pumping stations of the 3rd and 4th lifts situated within the precincts of the town as well as a distribution system and a consumer who should receive a qualitative product meeting the specified requirements. In the issue of assessment of influence of water consumption decrease on the operation mode of facilities, specialists of the MCUE Mosvodokanal have developed the complex of immediate and long-term measures aimed at optimization of conditions of water supply and distribution, conservation of some water supply facilities.

Repeated Use of Supernatant Water Generated in the Course of Treatment of Sludge from Water Treatment Plants

Summary

Results of the laboratory investigation of the process of treatment of flows generated in the course of treatment of sludge at water treatment plants using the flocculants of different types are presented. Two flocculants used at the Moscow State Unitary Enterprise Mosvodokanal, Praestol TR-650 and BC-852, have been evaluated. A few flocculants making it possible to treat the flows (discharges) maximally have been also selected for comparison. An assessment of influence of addition of flows to influent water coming to the facilities of the Eastern water treatment station has been made. Results obtained confirm the necessity of preliminary treatment of flows with flocculants before their supply to the head of facilities. When untreated flows are added the necessity of increasing the doses of reagents used may arise.

Perspectives of Introduction of Membrane Technique at Treatment Facilities of Moscow

Symmary

Studies of the membrane technique of treatment of low-concentrated municipal wastewater at a pilot unit of up to 5 m3/day capacity have been carried out. As a result, high quality of treated water concerning suspended particles and biogenic elements has been obtained, resistance to volley entries of industrial wastewater and high efficiency of water disinfection have been reached. Results of pilot tests have made it possible to appreciate the membrane biotechnologies as perspective for realization at Moscow treatment facilities. Advantages of the technology with the use of membrane bioreactors: considerable reduction in volumes of facilities and spaces occupied by them owing to the high concentration of activated sludge, possibility of a higher load per a volume unit and also significant decrease in quantity of excessive activated sludge. Membrane bioreactor technologies are one of the perspectives of development of treatment facilities under the conditions of limited areas.

Experience of Operation of Facilities of Wastewater Biological Treatment for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Compounds

Summary

Introduction of technologies of wastewater treatment for nitrogen and phosphorus compounds is a priority way of development and reconstruction of treatment facilities of the MSUE Mosvodokanal. The technology of acidification of raw sludge of primary sedimentation plants makes it possible to increase the concentration of readily oxidizable organic compounds in wastewater which are necessary for organization of the process of advanced biological removal of phosphorus. Acidification of primary sludge of wastewater was introduced on industrial scale at the Lyubertsy treatment facilities of Moscow in 2009; it makes it possible to ensure the high quality of water treated at the block of biogenic elements removal of total capacity of 500 000 m3/day.

Research in Operation of Nitri-Denitrification Aerotanks with Heightened Doses of Activated Sludge

Summary

Specialists of the MSUE Mosvodokanal have developed the technological method making it possible to develop purposefully activated sludge having a sludge index reduced stably for technology of biogenic elements removal and heightened speed of sedimentation. It makes it possible to increase the oxidation capacity of aerotanks as regard the chemical oxygen consumption and ammonium nitrogen. In the issue of pilot studies carried out the rise of oxidation capacity by 1,6–1,7 times owing to the change of technological conditions of the unit operation has been achieved. The method developed makes it possible to reconstruct aerotanks for biological treatment of wastewater for nitrogen and phosphorus without reduction of hydraulic loading.

Utilization of Biogas and Creation of Autonomous Sources of Power Supply at Treatment Facilities

Summary

The process of methane fermentation of sludge generated in the course of wastewater treatment is used at sewerage treatment facilities of the MSUE Mosvodokanal. The complex reconstruction of heated digestion tanks is carried out since1998; as a result of it the output of biogas has been increased by 1,7 times – up to 250 000 m3/day. To rise the efficiency of using the biogas and reliability of power supply it was decided to construct two mini-heat electric power stations of 10 MWt capacity each. An investor, the Austrian concern EVN, has been selected on the competition base. The mini-heat electric power station at the Kuryanovo treatment facilities was put into operation in January 2009. This mini-HEPS ensures 50% of need in electric energy and 30% in heat energy. This project became one of the largest in the field of alternative power engineering and the first power station in Russia operating on biogas.
