Deep-well pumping units at the Velizhany water treatment facilities of Tumen

Summary

Centrifugal submersible pumps are designed for installation in deep wells, open pits and different reservoirs. The pumps ensure high pressure of the pumped clean water with a small sand concentration. Deep-well pumps are widely used both for domestic and industrial purposes (e. g. for automatic water supply, garden irrigation, in firefighting systems etc.). Deep-well pumping units have been used at the Tumen Vodokanal facilities from the beginning of 1980-ies in response to the need of deep underground water abstraction. The story of establishing the production of APVM and ETSV deep-well pumping units at the premises of the mechanical repair department of «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC is described. The problems related to their production and operation are designated. The succeeding introduction of advanced energy efficient equipment manufactured by Wilo German company and SAER Italian company is considered, the results of their operation are presented. Replacing ETSV pumping units with Wilo and SAER energy efficient pumps provided for reducing the energy intensity at the water intake facilities of the Velizhany water treatment plant by 23.8%. The results of pilot operation of Ciris CRS10-65/3 deep-well pumping unit manufactured by Livnynasos OJSC at one of the Tumen water intakes are summarized. The operation of deep-well pumping units made of high quality anticorrosive materials allowed three-fold reduction of repairs and hence significantly decrease of the operation and maintenance expenditures at the intake pumping station of the Velizhany water treatment facilities.

The experience of establishing vibration diagnostics laboratory

Summary

The equipment life time includes the stage of maintenance and repair. Maintenance and repair control aims at reducing equipment outage and maintenance expenditures. Very often this stage is vitally important for industrial enterprises since maintenance expenditures are rather high. For the Russian enterprises maintenance and repair expenditures can reach 80% of the profit (the average value in USA and Western Europe is 25–30%). Nevertheless, even with these expenditures the failure rate in industry is too high. All the maintenance and repair expenditures are included into the water and sewerage tariff. Considering the social significance of tariff rates more transparent and reasonable repair process must be worked out. The control philosophy improvement, tools of technical control and diagnostics of the equipment condition provided for enhancing the efficiency of equipment maintenance and repair control. However, the operating experience shows that they did not gain widespread currency at the Russian industrial enterprises. In Tumen Vodokanal a vibration diagnostics laboratory has been established that carries out pumping unit vibration control and alignment at the company facilities. The conducted works ensured reducing pumping unit failures and improving the efficiency of cash flow distribution for the equipment repair.

The experience of introducing TV-inspection of sewers

Summary

Sustainable operation of utility distribution systems is an essential condition of ensuring comfortable life in megacities. Integrity and long operational life are the main requirements to the different-purpose pipelines (gas and water supply, sewers etc.). Regular TV-inspections of sewer condition provide for more efficient distribution of operation and repair expenditures, reduction of emergency repairs. The practical experience of establishing a TV-inspection laboratory in «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC and the results of its activities during 2011–2013 are presented. TV-inspection is an advanced technology of evaluating technical condition of underground utility distribution pipelines and engineering structures. The efficiency of the pipeline TV-inspection method when introduced into the flow process is shown. For the entire period of operation the TV-inspection laboratory specialists have investigated more than 350 objects, i. e. more than 46 kilometers of sewers, among them 30 kilometers of newly built networks. By means of using TV-inspection the time for determining the causes and locating blockages, leaks and other sewer pipe failures is reduced. Therefore, the amount of excavating and hence the general cost of repair works is reduced. Significant improving the culture and quality of construction works is an unconditional success of the laboratory activities. During two and a half years of the laboratory operations the number of facilities approved for operation on the first try increased more than 10-fold, whereas the number of defects to be eliminated with relaying or repair of pipe sections reduced more than 20-fold.
