Sustainable municipal water supply with the help  of pneumatic barrier complexes at water intakes

Summary

The safety of water supply systems depends upon the sustainable operation of the water intakes. In the process of water abstraction from the surface water sources some problems may arise because of frazil ice events, low water levels, bottom sediments transport. Ice buildup including frazil slush clog the screens of the water receiving openings of the inlet head, gravity conduits and receiving chambers of the riverbank well interrupting water delivery to the customers. Such problems may arise not only in the direct stream and riverbank-based water intakes but also in forebay basin water intakes. However, they can be eliminated by installing upstream the inlet head or forebay basin intake a system of perforated pipes of a pneumatic barrier complex. Installing such complexes functioning as protecting structures against ice buildup and fish demonstrated their high efficiency. The presented formulae can be used for determining the parameters of compressed air that provides for the efficient operation of the pneumatic barrier complex.

Integrated Approach to Optimization of Operation of the Water Supply and Distribution System of the City of Omsk

Summary

An integrated approach to the optimization of operation of the water supply and distribution system of large cities based on hydraulic modelling with the use of modern software products is proposed. A possibility of adaptation to actual conditions of calculated results obtained by electronic simulation of water supply networks is shown on the example of Omsk. The solution of this problem makes it possible to model the necessary changes in the composition and mode of operation of each of the elements of a water supply network. The result of such an approach is reduction in the accident rate at networks and energy savings at pumping stations. Methods of execution of works, means of the measurement used, sequence of measures to be taken, the results obtained and possible prospects are presented.

Ways to improve the municipal water supply and distribution system

Summary

Simulation of all possible switch-overs in the municipal water distribution network caused by fault section cutoffs is practically unfeasible because of the large number of simulation cases. For the implementation a method of the distribution network dividing into separate districts (zones) with water flow rate measured at the input and outlet is suggested in a similar way to the elimination of leaks. Within the limits of each district including up to 50 km pipelines the search of the isolated sections becomes feasible. At that determining the reliability of the water supply in each district as a part of the annual period when the customer receives water on a regular basis is possible. This is achieved with the use of Markov model for determining the period of the water distribution network being operational and in the state with simultaneously isolated sections. Then by hydraulic calculations the parameters of the network in non-operating conditions are determined; at that it is determined which parameters are related to the operation period with normal or lowered level of performance.

Developing and implementing measures on pressure normalization in the water supply system of Tyumen city

Summary

The experience of introducing pressure regulators in the water distribution network of Tyumen city is presented. The procedure of designing the network operation parameters basing on hydraulic simulation with the use of advanced software is set. The possible efficient long-term use of pressure regulators under subzero weather conditions typical for Siberia is shown. The practical experience of the equipment installation and adjustment is laid out; the specific features of the equipment operation are considered. Based on the pipeline failure number the analysis of the efficiency of the measures on the free head normalization in the network is carried out. The installation of pressure regulators in the Tyumen water distribution network resulted in the failure rate reduction and power saving at the pumping stations.
