Hydraulic model in the water distribution network operation control in the city of Saint-Petersburg

Summary

The experience of Saint-Petersburg Vodokanal applying hydraulic models of the water distribution network in tackling most complicated technical problems is described. The process of establishing a comprehensive system of water supply management includes multioption hydraulic calculations and assignment of the control points to control the operation of pumping stations. The investigations of the network resistance are carried out, models are specialized and new simulation trends are developed. The development of information systems that supply the initial data for the models as well as data exchange provide for improving the accuracy of the calculation results and introducing new calculation types.

The use of geographic information systems in the Rostov Vodokanal operations

Summary

The efficient operation of water supply systems in the cities is impossible without using advanced geographic information technologies. They provide for accumulating and organizing significant amounts of the daily incoming data that characterize the process and energy parameters of different equipment at the water and wastewater facilities – from water intakes to effluent outfalls. The information from 44 master control points, 80 water pumping stations of the first through fourth stages, potable and process water meters, meters of the effluent discharged into the surface water bodies is acquired in real-time mode. Processing this information, controlling and adjusting 45 pressure control valves and other work related to maintaining the set process flow pattern at the water and wastewater facilities located on the territory of more than 34,850 hectares require reliable assistants. These particular assistants, ZuluHydro and ZuluDrain home-made systems, are used by the engineers and technicians of «Rostovvodokanal» JSC in their routine work. The practical use of the processed information in the analytical and operational activities significantly reduces the time for making technologically correct decisions and provides for obtaining real benefits in the form of reduced energy costs and saving in material resources consumption.

Determining latent water losses in the water distribution networks in Samara by hydraulic model development and calibration

Summary

The Russian and international experience in water supply system management shows that the assessment of the efficiency of the solutions focused on ensuring the working capacity of a water supply and distribution system should take into account possible active search for the latent water losses in the process of the system operation. The successful solution of this task can be implemented only with the help of advanced computer technologies and appropriate software. With the purpose of improving the energy efficiency of the operating activities «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC carried out the search and subsequent elimination of the latent water losses in a localized water supply zone with a surface area of 560 hectare; Zulu Hydro hydraulic modeling program developed by «Politerm» Company and Water GEMS software developed by Bentley were approbated in practice. Based on the results of the calculations a 90 hectare area was picked out with the maximum potential unaccounted water losses. Besides, because of the occurrence of the boundaries of possible influence of the adjacent water supply zones in the designated area an assumption of the water migration was made. As a result of the elimination of the detected water losses the total water consumption in Samara lowered by 1.38%.

Optimization of water supply system of the left bank districts of Novosibirsk

Summary

For the past 15 years a package of measures has been implemented in the Novosibirsk water supply system with the introduction of advanced equipment and technologies that provided for significant improving the reliability and efficiency of operations. The measures included installing variable-speed drives on pumping units; changing-over the operation of the pumping station to the remote control point operation, introducing pressure control system etc. To ensure the control over the water supply operation the activities on establishing automated pressure control in the water distribution network were initiated. At present 32 pressure control points have been established in the city left bank districts that allow real-time tracking the network operation parameters. All the pumping stations and most important points of the water distribution network were equipped with pressure sensors. The experts of Gorvodokanal of Novosibirsk MUE introduced a software package with the purpose of: monitoring and analyzing water consumption in water supply zones; analyzing the energy efficiency of equipment operation; monitoring and analyzing pressure losses in the water distribution network. The measures on optimizing the water supply system operation implemented in Gorvodokanal confirm that the systems designed and built in 1960–1980-ies have a big potential for upgrade. The upgrade will provide for significant reduction of operating costs and improvement of the water supply quality.

The experience of using geographical information technologies  and program-calculation complexes in searching unaccounted-for-water losses in the Samara water supply system

Summary

The use of geographical information systems and program-calculation complexes for hydraulic simulation of water supply systems provides for minimizing the labor intensity and calculation time, carrying out more complete and high-quality analysis of the results obtained, and applying efficiently in practice of searching unaccounted-for-water losses in the water distribution networks. The elimination of water losses provides for reducing the operating expenses, introducing most economical operation method, improving the operating reliability of each separate element and the entire system. The introduction of ZuluHydro 7.0 geographical information system and hydraulic simulation designed by Polyterm Russian company at the facilities of «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC ensured 38% reduction of the delivery water volume into the local zone network, 8 m w. c. reduction of the output pressure at the main pumping station, formation of the algorithm of actions in searching unaccounted-for-water losses (technical and commercial), and its extrapolation on the entire Samara water supply system.
