Optimization of Operation of a City Water Supply System

Summary

Methods of the optimization of operation of a municipal water supply network of the city of Novosibirsk are presented. A number of variants of installation of reducing valves on different sites of the water supply network at the neighbourhoods Pashino (to itself) and Severny (after itself) of the Kalininsky District of the city are considered in detail. The results of the operation of various pressure regulators and frequency converters used at water supply pumping stations during the last few years are given. As a result of the installation of pressure regulators on sections of the water supply network of the Pashino and Severny neighbourhoods of Novosibirsk the total pumping capacity of stations Drinking Centre and Heat-and-Power Station-4 (HPS-4) has been cut by 10–15% and the pressure at the fourth-stage pumping station (HPS-4) has been reduced by 10 m H2O. At the same time the breakdown rate of the water supply networks of the neighbourhoods has dropped by 10–20%.

Optimization of water supply system of the left bank districts of Novosibirsk

Summary

For the past 15 years a package of measures has been implemented in the Novosibirsk water supply system with the introduction of advanced equipment and technologies that provided for significant improving the reliability and efficiency of operations. The measures included installing variable-speed drives on pumping units; changing-over the operation of the pumping station to the remote control point operation, introducing pressure control system etc. To ensure the control over the water supply operation the activities on establishing automated pressure control in the water distribution network were initiated. At present 32 pressure control points have been established in the city left bank districts that allow real-time tracking the network operation parameters. All the pumping stations and most important points of the water distribution network were equipped with pressure sensors. The experts of Gorvodokanal of Novosibirsk MUE introduced a software package with the purpose of: monitoring and analyzing water consumption in water supply zones; analyzing the energy efficiency of equipment operation; monitoring and analyzing pressure losses in the water distribution network. The measures on optimizing the water supply system operation implemented in Gorvodokanal confirm that the systems designed and built in 1960–1980-ies have a big potential for upgrade. The upgrade will provide for significant reduction of operating costs and improvement of the water supply quality.

The experience of introducing variable-frequency electric drives of pumping units

Summary

Regulating the rotation speed of pumping unit rotors at the pumping stations of the second and third lift of the Samara pumping-filtration station has been suggested, tried and tested. The introduction of frequency regulation mode of the pumping units operation with the use of variable-frequency electric drives provided for 29.52% reduction of the failure rate of the water mains and distribution networks compared to 2013 and 25.58% reduction compared to 2014; 23% reduction of the power consumption by the pumping units of the second lift pumping station; 15.4% reduction by the pumping units of the third lift pumping station supplying water to the customers. At that the reliability of the water supply system in whole improves owing to the reduction of the network failure rate alongside with the quality of services provided by «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC.

Specific features of collection and treatment of industrial stormwater runoff from motor transport enterprises

Summary

The urgency of the problem of industrial stormwater runoff collection and treatment has been caused by the continuous car density growth that is a high-toxic pollution source. The task of the studies was investigation and assessment of the motor transport enterprise impact on the municipal watershed health under current conditions. The results of inspecting water utilization schemes at motor transport enterprises, bus, trolley-bus and taxi depots, truck depots, motor pools of construction equipment, road machinery and specialty vehicles are presented. Core process flows: engine, radiator and machine battery part washing, fuel tank testing, parts and assemblies washing, outside washing and painting of motor vehicles were investigated. Full-scale inspection of local intrashop wastewater treatment facilities and intrasite surface runoff facilities was carried out; laboratory analyses of raw wastewater and effluent quantitative and qualitative parameters including oil products, suspended solids, salt content, synthetic surfactants, heavy metals etc. were made. Rational technical solutions for improving the operation of industrial stormwater runoff treatment facilities with the use of mechanical, physical and chemical treatment technologies including horizontal grit chambers, settlers-oil separators, pressure filter cascade with mineral granular media and high efficient sorption materials were suggested. At that, the efficiency of treatment meets the effluent requirements for being reused as process water or discharged into the municipal storm collector and water bodies.

Improving the operation of the Novosibirsk water supply system

Summary

In Novosibirsk over the past 20 years a set of measures has been implemented using equipment and technologies that have significantly improved the reliability and efficiency of the water supply system. Networks and facilities of the water supply system designed and built in the 1960–1980-ies have a large reserve for upgrade that will allow significantly improving their efficiency, reducing operating costs and improving the quality of water supply. As a result of the measures taken the company not only provides for the high-level water supply in the context of limited financial resources but also ensures the development of the city.

Enhancement of Operation Efficiency of Mechanical Treatment Plant of Samara’s Aeration Station

Summary

Problems of the treatment of wastewater of the Samara’s city aeration station connected with ineffective operation of mechanical screens are described. The substantiation of the choice of mechanical screens PC manufactured by PSP Prommashservis Ltd. for the replacement of obsolete equipment and also steel of 12X18H10T grade for manufacture of screens PC is made. The distinctive features of the screens that distinguish them among analogues are presented.
