Analysis of regulatory requirements for shut-off and control valves for drinking water supply networks and world practice

Summary

The problem of the absence in Russia of a specialized industry for the production of materials and equipment for the water supply and wastewater utilities is described. The requirements of domestic and international regulatory documents for shut-off and control valves for drinking water supply, including the methods of control and testing of valves in production, are stated and analyzed. The experience of operating shut-off and control valves in the drinking water distribution networks, including directly buried ones, at the facilities of SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» is presented. Particular attention is paid to the requirements of SUE «Vodokanal of St. Petersburg» to the shut-off and control valves installed in the municipal water distribution networks. Developing a system of regulatory documents directly for the water and wastewater utilities, and in particular for drinking water supply products, will provide for systematizing the requirements to the product control and testing systems, improving the quality and increasing the life of the utilities.

The use of advanced pipe accessories as a method of reducing water losses and improving energy efficiency

Summary

The reduction of physical water losses alongside with the improvement of water distribution energy efficiency is an important challenge both in Russia and all over the world. Described in the paper is the method of water losses reduction developed by the International Water Association (IWA) on the basis of four directions of activities, i. e. pressure control in the distribution network; leak detection and elimination; routine maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of the fittings and pipes; prompt elimination of distribution network failures. Comprehensive activities in the abovementioned fields allow reducing water losses to an economically acceptable level. Simple and efficient measures are replacement of valves and fittings as well as introduction of advanced safety valves, repair accessories and pressure control valves in the distribution network.

Reliable operation of wastewater collection systems and ways of its improvement

Summary

Characteristics of the three constituents of a municipal wastewater collection system, i.e. structural, design and operational are presented. Their impact on the reliable operation of the entire wastewater collection system is discussed. The reasons of reliability degradation of each of the constituents are analyzed. Based on the analytical results the specific features are considered and a number of administrative and technical measures to improve the reliability of the wastewater collection system both at the design stage and in the process of operation are suggested.
