Automation of the technological processes of wastewater treatment: case study of the Minsk wastewater treatment plant of UE Minskvodokanal


The experience of UE Minskvodokanal in developing and establishing of automated control systems for the technological process of wastewater treatment is presented using the example of several structures of the Minsk wastewater treatment plant. The goals and tasks performed by the automated process control systems at the plant are described. The structure and operating modes of the implemented systems are presented. The stages of the wastewater treatment process are considered in detail: screening, sand removing and processing, supplying and distributing air across sections of the aeration tanks. As part of the automation of the presented treatment stages, the general design of the automated process control system is described, the operating features, the objects used and automation modes are given. Special attention is paid to the need for simple and reliable control algorithms. The ultimate goal of upgrading the automated process control system of the Minsk wastewater treatment plant is the maximum degree of automation and supervisory control covering the entire technological chain of wastewater and sludge treatment based on the simple and reliable principles.

Advanced developments of Ecopolymer plant for wastewater treatment facilities


Ecopolymer company is well known in the market as a manufacturer of aeration systems. Over the past five years the company has expanded the product range adding a metal product line, upgraded production by installing advanced intelligent machines, and increased the staff of the design engineering bureau. The article describes the equipment, the production of which has been mastered over the past five years. The company strives to produce not individual types of products, but equipment packages designed to carry out a full cycle of process operations supported by the proprietary control systems. To date, the production facilities provide for the release of a full range of equipment for mechanical wastewater treatment – coarse and fine screens, conveyors and thickening presses for screenings, sand separators, grinders, etc. Particularly noteworthy is the innovative system for collecting floating substances in primary settling tanks in combination with the traditional scraper system. The produced sludge pumping systems have no rival among domestic manufacturers. Also, in addition to the well-known aeration systems, Ecopolymer Trade and Production Enterprise has developed AQUA-TOP 500, a new aeration system with a working capacity of 20–25 m3/h, that is equivalent to four 9” aerators.

Adoption of New Production Processes


The EcopolymerGroup in addition to products made of polymeric materials produces a wide range of equipment made of stainless and carbon steels for solution of different technological tasks of water supply and water disposal systems. Designs of equipment for wastewater and sludge treatment – check-in valves, rack fine treatment screens, belt filter-presses – are described. Main technical characteristics and advantages of the equipment manufactured are presented. Specialists of the company in cooperation with engineers of the South Korean partner have developed the design and mastered the serial production of a belt filter-press of BFS series fitting the level of the best world models.

The main innovations introduced by Amendment No. 2 to the Code of Practice CP 32.13330.2018 «Sewerage. Pipelines and Wastewater Treatment Plants»


The main prerequisites for the development of Amendment No. 2 to CP 32.13330.2018, and the tasks facing this work are described. The main innovations introduced by Amendment No. 2 are considered. The principles of synchronization of the system of engineering regulation of wastewater treatment processes with environmental regulation of discharges; clarification of the provisions for determining the estimated wastewater inflows; additions to the subsection on drain stations are described. The main additions and clarifications in terms of wastewater and sludge treatment technologies are described and justified (Chapter 9 of the Code of Practice), namely: updated requirements for intrahour safety factors while calculating channels and flumes; supplemented requirements for reliability in the design of channels of bar screen buildings and the data for calculating the amount of screenings depending on bar spacing; specified conditions for the use of sewage regulators; requirements for the calculation of primary settling tanks, aeration tanks, secondary settling tanks; recommendations for the removal of phosphorus; requirements for the redundancy of sludge dewatering equipment in case of the lack of spare sludge beds; introduced formulas for calculating the pollution of primary effluent; recommendations for sludge acidification from primary settling tanks; requirements for the redundancy of submersible electromechanical equipment of aeration tanks and for the regulation of sludge discharge from secondary settling tanks; detailed recommendations on the use of filtration beds for receiving effluents; the limits of applying mandatory dechlorination while using chlorine and the allowability of using prefabricated units.

Up-To-Date Equipment and Facilities for Mechanical Treatment of Wastewater from Coarse-Disperse Admixtures


Up-to-date equipment for wastewater treatment from coarse-disperse admixtures is considered. Designs of screens are described briefly, their advantages and shortcomings are presented. Formulas for calculation of head loss on sreens are presented. Recommendations to install screens with openings not less than 5 mm are made. The comparative analysis of different methods of sand-catchers design shows that the normative time of stay in sand catchers can be extended up to 10 minutes. Literary data treatment has made it possible to obtain formulas offered as a new calculation base for determination of efficiency of horizontal and aerated sand catchers during the designing. Up-to-date equipment for sand collection and removal is considered.

Cooperation for the Benefit of Ecology


It is told about the introduction of equipment of the Scientific-Production Company ECOTONfor modernization of treatment facilities of the city of Novosibirsk: tubular aerators, the automated complex of mechanical grates with a screw conveyor and a press-compactor, sluice gates, rake grates, belt filter-presses, screw transporters. The joint project of the Scientific-Production Company ECOTONand the Municipal Unitary Enterprise Gorvodokanalof Novosibirsk is oriented on the improvement of wastewater treatment and optimal reduction of expenditures for works execution. The use of equipment of the ECOTONCo. for the purpose of modernization of sewerage treatment facilities makes it possible to solve the problems of energy and resources saving.
