Investigating an advanced method of surface runoff treatment in the city of Sochi

Summary

The results of investigating storm water treatment technologies under the conditions of Sochi are presented. A pilot treatment plant is described, the operation of the basic units – lamella settler and filters – is considered. The kinetics of surface runoff suspended solids sedimentation is investigated. The performance characteristics of the lamella module during chemical sedimentation: downward clarified water flow rate in cavities, upward flow in plate spacing, and water surface loading were determined. The efficiency of using fibrous filter for storm water treatment was theoretically substantiated and studied. The service adhesive capacity of the filter was determined. The methods of the treatment unit regeneration are suggested.

Optimization of operation modes and improvement of operation conditions of surface runoff treatment facilities

Summary

Common drawbacks of packaged units for urban runoff treatment are considered. The task of the study was regulating and optimizing the operation modes of the existing facilities in order to improve the effluent quality to meet the standards. By the example of the unit that was most suitable for the generally accepted treatment process flow scheme the analysis of the operation of a laminar sedimentation tank module under design conditions was carried out. To determine the operation efficiency in the hydrodynamic mode physical experiments (by adding a chemically inactive tracer to wastewater being treated) and computer simulation were carried out. To upgrade the laminar sedimentation tank the chemical treatment stage was introduced into the process flow scheme. Adding coagulant provided for improving the treatment efficiency; however, the required concentrations of suspended solids in effluent downstream the sedimentation tank (10 mg/dm3) were not met. The efficiency of the sedimentation tank in hydrodynamic mode was improved by using stepped feed and distributed collection of wastewater in a modular unit as well as by using an air distribution system located in the lower central part of the laminar sedimentation tank module. This type of the design provided for coarse bubble aeration over the entire surface area of the chamber at the required mixing rate. The implemented design changes in the laminar sedimentation tank module resulted in the efficiency of urban runoff treatment before the further tertiary treatment meeting the regulatory requirements.

The experience of operating lamella settlers and clarifiers with built-in flocculation chambers

Summary

The results of upgrading primary water treatment facilities – flocculation chambers, sedimentation tanks and clarifiers based on the use of low-flow and low-pressure recirculators and lamella honeycomb modules made of polyethylene film 250–300 µm thick designed by ECOHOLDING Group experts are presented. The developed method of jointing film into a honeycomb construction with an inner rigid frame provides for the ruggedness and spacial stability of the honeycomb module and allows stretching it on the frames on perimeter only. Firm jointing of the film allows manufacturing a honeycomb construction of any size and angle of slope providing minimum loss of clarifying surface of the facilities of any configuration, both radial and rectangular. For long-term operated facilities honeycomb modules are tailormade after each of them has been measured. The possibility of ensuring the required recirculation rate at low head loss and minimum liquid flow rate to prevent the recycled suspension from destruction and facilitate efficient floc formation is an essential advantage of the developed methods of recirculator designing and constructing. The presented high-efficient methods of coagulation and sedimentation improvement form the basis of prefabricated «Struiia» and «Vlaga» modular water treatment units with 100–12000 m3/day capacities. The units are designed for natural water treatment: turbidity and color removal, softening, defluorination, de-ironing (composite forms, high concentrations of iron) and disinfection. They are used in water supply systems of settlements, towns, hospital care and health resorts, sport centers, fish farms, industrial enterprises or separate production facilities.

The experience of operating new water treatment facilities
at the South Water Treatment Plant in Saint-Petersburg

Summary

The information on specific features of the process flow schemes of drinking water preparation at the municipal water treatment plants in Saint-Petersburg is presented. The process of drinking water treatment at the new water treatment facilities (K-6 Block) of the South Water Treatment Plant is described where the cutting-edge technologies of water treatment are used. The technologies ensure the standard drinking water quality as regards all the indicators prescribed by Sanitary Rules and Regulations 2.1.4.1074-01 at any possible changes in the Neva River water quality, in particular in case of unfavorable and accidental events in water sources (in case of accidental discharges, storms at the Ladoga etc.). An automated water quality control system with the use of flow-type analyzers fed with water samples taken continuously at different points of the treatment process has been introduced at the plant. This provides for the on-line information on the operation efficiency of separate units for operating control. The analysis of the operational data for K-6 Block that includes lamella clarifiers, double-layer filters with sand media and activated carbon is presented. Herewith wash water and sludge treatment and utilization are provided. The results of the comprehensive water quality analysis for 51 parameters at the outlet of K-6 Block at the South Water Treatment Plant are given.

The technology of processing and dewatering finely grained sludge from a coal cleaning plant

Summary

Introducing a self-contained «Slime water treatment module» at the «Kurakhovskaia» Central coal cleaning plant (Ukraine) is considered. Actually the module is an advanced analogue of a water-slurry system at the coal cleaning plant. Using the module provides for successful handling environmental issues with the help of the advanced automation means and a minimum personnel number. The technology of slime water treatment and waste dewatering is implemented in the module that is an automated equipment chain that allows extracting fine grained sludge (particle size less than 0.5 mm) from industrial wastewater, sludge dewatering to make it transportable, and returning the effluent into the beneficiation cycle at the plant. In the module solid matter is precipitating in laminar settlers, and thickened product is dewatered in high speed decanter centrifuges. To stimulate the sedimentation process aqueous solution of polyacrylamide-based flocculant is used.
